How do I use Google Takeout to download a copy of all my Google data?

0votes

I want to back up my Gmail, Google Photos, and Drive files before cleaning up my account. I've heard Google Takeout can export everything.

Step-by-step directions for finding Google Takeout, choosing which services to export, and actually getting the download.

I found takeout.google.com but the page lists dozens of products with checkboxes, different export formats, and delivery options. I selected everything and clicked export, but nothing downloaded — I'm not sure where the files went or how long it takes.

Creating a Takeout export requests an archive; it does not start an immediate download. Google prepares the files and sends a link. Preparation can take minutes to days. Exporting does not delete the originals. Google's export guide.

Before cleaning up your account, download every archive part and check that the files you need open. Keep the backup private. A successful export request alone is not a verified backup.

Start at Google Takeout.

  1. Open Google Takeout and check that you are in the correct account.
  2. Select the products you need, such as Mail, Drive and Google Photos. Review any product-specific selection options.
  3. Choose Next step, email delivery, a one-time export and ZIP format. Pick an archive size suitable for your connection; larger exports may be split.
  4. Create the export, then wait for Google's email rather than repeatedly submitting it.
  5. Follow the download link, complete Google's verification if requested, and download all parts before they expire.
  6. Extract the archives and read archive_browser.html for format guidance. If the export fails, retry with fewer products or smaller archives.
